Although I have only recently begun to work with photography as the main focus of my work, I feel that these images demonstrate a variety of approaches and photographic applications and the speed at which I can learn. The featured work focuses on two themes: Identity and Decay.
The first three images look at the idea of identity, a title that was given to me at the beginning of the course, as part of an induction project. However, I have continued to develop this theme alongside my self-directed work. The images explore my identity, along with that of my twin sister; looking at how twins continually question their identity as a result of comparisons made by others. The majority of these images were developed using traditional photographic processes; the use of double exposures helps to further portray these ideas.
The rest of the images deal specifically with current work, looking at the passing of time and the effects of decay; exploring the textures and layers that build up when a space is left unoccupied. I am particularly interested in the encroachment of nature on a place when it is exposed to the elements and left alone. I have included a range of images based on this theme, including pages from my drawing book and experimental work.
I believe that studying on the Photography course at Manchester Metropolitan will enable me to develop myself as a practitioner in an exciting environment, working with like-minded people. I also look forward to using the facilities available, such as the wet and digital darkrooms, and the photography studios. I am always aiming to widen my knowledge of photography, incorporating new and different techniques, utilising both analogue and digital processes in order to move my visual language forward, and develop my ideas further.
